Check a container number

The eleventh character of a container number is arithmetic on the other ten. This page does that arithmetic in your browser, with the same function that stencilled the number onto the container in the photographs.

How it works

Each of the first ten characters gets a value: digits are themselves, letters run A = 10 to Z = 38, skipping every multiple of eleven. Each value is multiplied by 2position, position counting from zero. Sum them, take the remainder modulo 11, and write 10 as 0.

For KRTU481502 the sum is 2,507; 2,507 mod 11 is 10; so the check digit is 0.

Try changing one digit. Roughly nine times in ten the check will catch it — which is exactly what it is for, because the number is read off a wet steel wall in the dark.

This page is a check digit calculator, not a booking system — it validates the structure of a number and nothing else. For the position of an actual consignment, quote your bill of lading number to the Mersin desk and you will get a person who can see the ship.
